The God Complex

„Do you know that feeling, sometimes, for example at the station, you are standing next to the platform edge and  people, which are only a few inches away from you and the rails, are walking past you… and you’ve got that  feeling, if you jostled someone down… and an incoming train would crush that person’s bones…, that you have the almighty power over life and death, the might to judge human lives, to decide who is worth to carry on with life and who is not…

Do you know that feeling? That ultimate, godlike feeling?”

The boy took down his right arm, which was shading his eyes, and glimpsed at the aristocratic-looking man sitting on a chair beside him.

The man looked at him irritated. “No. No, I don’t know that feeling, Desmond.

And wasn’t I supposed to ask the questions here?”

Desmond’s eyes narrowed. “Maybe.” Pause. “Well, anyway, I know that feeling.”

He licked his lips meditatively. “I like it. I feel so strong, so powerful, almighty, godly.”

The doctor frowned. “You do want to make people feel uneasy in your presence, don’t you?”

“Hmhm. Maybe, maybe not”, the boy smiled with an amused twinkle in his eyes.

As fast as the smile came to his face, it left and he closed his eyes for a second.

“How would you go on a killing spree – I mean, what weapon would you use, imagine, if you wanted to charge your school to kill all those abhorred individuals there?”

The doctor swallowed hard. “Stop it. Just stop it. You do know, I wont answer those maniac questions. Please, for God’s Sake, please stop asking such … weird questions!”

“Aye, Dr.”, Desmond blinked.

Then after a while he murmured: “A crossbow.”

The doctor looked up from his notebook. “Huh?”

“I would use a crossbow.”

“A crossbow? Why?”

“Don’t know, more fun, I believe. Imagine… a bolt fired from short distance. The effect would be immense.”

“You know why you are here. You know, you aren’t here to say such abnormal things. That is not you. I want to help you, but your behaviour makes it impossible to. Why don’t you help me helping you? Stop working against me.”

Desmond shifted on the couch. His gaze was focused on the doctor’s feet. “I’m not working against anyone. I’ve got no reason to. Well, until now I’ve had no reason to. I’m waiting, I’m on the prowl, like a wolf waiting for a young deer to show up. There’s no need to fear for the villagers of the village, beneath whom the dragon sleeping in his cave under the earth. They only have to be afraid by the time the dragon awakes and decides to devour the folks in town.”

He glanced at the doctor, his eyes full of worry, grief, pain. As well as intelligence, creativity and experience. That boy was so far away from being a common teenager. He was a genius, a poet and somehow weird, cold, childish – but he also seemed unlike other humans - some kind of an immortal and supernatural being. He was a mystery, an unwritten book full of the secrets of life and the world. His view grew colder, he was staring emotionless at the ground.

“I’ve got to go now, Doctor. Need to finish some business, you know? Important meeting in game waits”, Desmond grinned ironically. “Good Bye.”

“But… Desmond, what is the point of your sessions, if you leave before we even start it?”

“Maybe there is no point, maybe there is one. Who knows? Not me. See you, Doctor.”
